One other partner at least is in Hongkong, Ng Tim Kei, the name has occurred before in the other papers I have reported on, he appears to be the financier, and arranges for the remittence of money, he undoubtedly carries on a genuine exchange business but the basis is the money obtained in Hongkong by the sale of opium obtained from Kwong Chow Van. He has not been located yet.

5. The firm dealt in every kind of opium, Indian, Persian, Chinese raw opium, and various kinds of prepared opium including that prepared from Indian and Persian opium.

I am unable to distinguish clearly what is meant by "Big Sugar" as opposed to "Round Suger", the latter is the

usual Indian opium from Bengal, 40 balls to the chest, the

other kind may be the Type of Indian Opium made into flat

cakes, or may be the kind of opium sometimes called Malwa,

which is made up into balls about the size of cricket balls

and containing about a quarter the weight of opium a

compared with the balls of Benares. There appears to be

little difference however in the price obtained for either

kind.

An interesting item in the letters is the anxiety about the arrival of smuggled opium from India at Hongkong, apparently steps had been taken to obtain opium from India by means of the crews of ships trading with India, and in a book of addressee found there were given the names of
